About the Course: Dare to Be Seen

Dare to Be Seen is a ten-week theater course in English, open to both internationals and Dutch participants. Together, we work toward a theatrical presentation for an audience of our own choosing.
In everyday life, we often wear masks, showing what feels acceptable while keeping our inner world hidden. In this course, we experiment with turning that around. Using the mask of theater, we explore what truly moves us: our stories, questions, longings, and lived experiences.

Participants shape material in ways that feel right for them, through scenes, monologues, movement, poetry, humor, song, or silence. Sometimes, we work together, sometimes individually. All contributions come together in a shared presentation around a connecting theme.

No theatre experience is required. The course is suitable for people who have never been on stage as well as for experienced performers. What matters most is a willingness to explore, to be present, and to work from your own experience – at your own pace and in a way that feels safe.

Dare to Be Seen is an invitation to step into the light a little more, supported by theatre, community, and trust in your own unfolding process.

Please note:

  • Little to no theater experience? We recommend taking the course Permission to Fail (or the Dutch version: Fouten Maken Mag) first. It will introduce you to acting and being on stage in front of people.
  • Attendance. We ask you to be present as consistently as possible. Illness can happen, of course. But because we are working together on a shared presentation, we need everyone each week.
  • English. As stated before, this course is in English, and everyone is welcome to attend, no matter your level of English. The presentation will also be in English. In this way, we provide a shared course for our Dutch and international community.

This course is a collaboration between Stichting Geestkracht11 and Sedna Herstelacademie.

Dare to Be Seen | Theater, Recovery, and Living a Meaningful Life

About Sedna Recovery Academy
Sedna Recovery Academy offers a welcoming and supportive space in Groningen where people can explore who they are, what matters to them, and what supports their well-being. Our activities, courses, and community initiatives are open to everyone, regardless of background, life story, or current challenges.
At Sedna, recovery is understood in a broad and human sense. It is not limited to addiction, illness, or diagnosis, nor is it about fixing what is broken or returning to a former version of yourself. Recovery (herstel) is about building a meaningful life, with or without ongoing vulnerabilities.
Recovery may involve finding balance after burnout, navigating life transitions, living with loss, or simply creating more space for joy, connection, and authenticity. We work from a deep trust in people’s inherent capacity to grow, connect, and shape their own lives in ways that feel true to them.

Why Theater Can Be Part of Recovery
Theatre creates a space where play, imagination, and truth can coexist. By working with stories, movement, characters, and metaphor, we gain just enough distance from our everyday roles to explore ourselves with curiosity rather than judgment.
Experiences that are hard to put into words can take shape through voice, silence, humor, or movement. Theatre allows us to try out perspectives, give form to inner experiences, and discover that even our vulnerable or unfinished parts can be meaningful and worthy of being seen.

Rather than asking for perfection, theater invites presence, authenticity, and connection with ourselves and with others. For many people, this makes it a powerful and supportive element in a recovery process.
